The Library Edition is an online archive featuring back issues of The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald from 2006 to the present. The Library Edition is operated by Smedia Pty Ltd under licence from Nine Entertainment Co.
By registering for and using the Library Edition, you agree to these Subscription Terms of Use (“Terms”), which govern your subscription and access to the service.
-
Registration, Authorised Use, Security & Monitoring
- Your subscription will not be valid until your registration has been accepted and confirmed. All personal information you provide will be handled in accordance with the Library Edition Privacy Policy.
- Upon registration, you will be issued with login credentials. Multi-user subscribers (such as schools, libraries, or organisations) may be provided with an auto-login link. Auto-login links and login credentials must be kept strictly behind your institution’s secure, password-protected system (e.g., intranet, student portal, or library gateway). They must not be placed on any publicly accessible website.
-
Authorised users include:
- Students and staff of subscribing educational institutions;
- Direct employees of subscribing organisations or companies;
- Private members of subscribing state or community libraries.
- Institutions are responsible for ensuring that access is not provided to non-subscribing organisations, companies, or libraries, and that login details are not shared externally.
- Institutions must take reasonable steps to manage access, including promptly revoking credentials for former staff, students, or members who are no longer authorised.
- The Library Edition may monitor usage and take any action it deems appropriate to prevent unauthorised access, including suspension or termination of the subscription.
- You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your login credentials and must not share your login details with others. Smedia implements a range of security measures informed by the Australian Cyber Security Centre’s Essential Eight framework. These measures include patching applications and operating systems, restricting administrative privileges at both the application and server levels, maintaining regular backups, and applying forms of application control across our platforms. While multi-factor authentication is used within elements of our server infrastructure, it is not applied within The Library Edition user application. Smedia does not use or process Microsoft Office documents within The Library Edition platform, and therefore does not apply macro restriction controls. User application hardening is also not applied, as the platform is delivered through standard web browsers and does not utilise Office documents, macros, Java, Flash or other client-side executable components for which such controls are intended. These controls form part of Smedia’s broader approach to maintaining a secure environment, however you acknowledge that no system is completely secure, and you use the service at your own risk.
-
Intellectual Property & Use of Material
- All content within the Library Edition (“Material”) is protected by copyright, trade mark, and other intellectual property laws.
- You may reproduce and display Material for your own personal, non-commercial reference only. Institutions may make Material available only to authorised users via their secure login systems.
- Except for a temporary cache copy or a single personal reference copy, Material must not be reproduced, published, altered, distributed, or transmitted in any form without prior written permission from Smedia or Nine.
- You may not use any Material to establish, maintain, or provide your own publications, internet sites, or other means of distribution.
- Logos, mastheads, and trademarks appearing in the Library Edition may not be used without express written consent.
- Any promotional material or communication about the Library Edition within institutions or member groups must be approved in advance by Smedia.
-
Use of Artificial Intelligence
- The Library Edition platform provides access to current and historical newspaper content in a digital replica format. The content and services made available through The Library Edition are not generated, enhanced or influenced by artificial intelligence technologies. All material accessible through the platform is sourced from existing archival records of The Sydney Morning Herald, The Sun-Herald and The Age, and any processing performed is limited to standard digitisation, indexing and search functions. No generative AI systems are used to create, alter or deliver the information or the Content.
